Another sunny day in Southern California, and it just happened to be my birthday. A morning at church, then off to the farmer’s market for some berries and flowers. Acai bowls for lunch, of course. Then afternoon naps for everyone. A steak dinner cooked by my husband to round out the day. It’s not fancy, just simple and the way we like it around here. A perfect family day with my tribe.
There’s more to this, though. As I am writing, I am giggling a little because I am also remembering the “real” moments from the day. There was the embarrassing moment at church when a sweet little girl in Chloe’s class said, “Good morning!” to her and she buried her head in my shoulder and refused to say hi. Yes, the manners of a two year old can be few and far between. There was me, wanting to take birthday pictures with my girls, but Em was sleeping and Chloe was … well … being two again. And then there was walking to my favorite lunch spot after the market only to find it had way too long of a wait for people with kids. Like us. And the meltdown in the car when Chloe discovered we had forgotten to bring her water bottle. Oh yes, and only the baby took that long afternoon nap I had dreamed of.
But it was a beautiful day. Because I was with them – my family, my crew, my people. And though I am older than I care to admit or even believe, motherhood is a good look on me if I do say so myself. I am my most comfortable, my most grounded and my most happy as a mom. It feels right, and I am beyond grateful for another year to be a mama.
xoxo, Heidi
