When I was young, my family had an Easter tree tradition. My mom would cut down a big branch from a tree in our backyard and set it up in a basket in our living room. We would decorate it with colorful, wooden Easter ornaments. Last Easter, when Chloe was almost two, my mom asked me if I wanted those ornaments. She had kept them all. I was delighted to bring them into our home and carry on an Easter tree tradition! I tried to cut off a branch from one of our trees, but evidently we don’t have the right kind of trees (think limp branch with dead leaves on it) so that didn’t quite work out. This year, I bought a little tree instead. It’s much smaller than what I grew up with, but for now it will work.
I handed the tree and the ornaments over to Chloe so she could decorate to her heart’s content, but as I snapped pictures of her, I noticed she much preferred sorting and organizing all the ornaments. Eventually, after about 15 minutes, she gathered up the tree and decorations, put them in her shopping cart and wheeled them around the house. What are you gonna do, right? Toddlers march to the beat of their own drum!
But it was just so sweet seeing those precious ornaments, that bring back dear memories to me, in the hands of my own daughter. There is such joy in keeping and making family traditions.
