… for the newly independent reader. My daughter is almost 7 and just finished first grade. Her reading really took off in the last couple of months, and I wanted to introduce her to chapter books she could read on her own. She is intimidated by ones without pictures so I initially looked for ones that had illustrations and shorter chapters. Content-wise, I am also picky. I wanted to find stories with diverse characters, plenty of female protagonists and plots revolving around adventure and character-building.
We started out with The Unicorn Diaries and the Owl Diaries. She is currently devouring The Critter Club series. I decided to compile a short list of other good series we can work through. I based these picks off Amazon reviews, age level and recommendations from other moms! What books has your newly independent reader been enjoying?
